Between a TCI tricone bit and a milled tooth tricone bit, the answer is straightforward. A TCI tricone bit is more durable than a milled tooth tricone bit. A tricone bit, also called a roller cone bit, is built with three rotating cones that crush, chip, and scrape rock as the bit turns. The cutting elements on those cones are what separate the two main types. A milled tooth tricone bit cuts its teeth directly out of the steel cone body. A TCI tricone bit presses individual tungsten carbide inserts into the cones instead. That single difference in construction drives nearly every other difference in performance, including durability.
The durability gap comes down to the cutting material. Tungsten carbide is significantly harder and more wear resistant than the steel used for milled teeth. When a TCI tricone bit rolls over hard or abrasive rock, the carbide inserts crush and chip the formation while holding their edge. Milled steel teeth, on the other hand, dull quickly in the same conditions, and once the teeth lose their shape the bit stops cutting efficiently and has to be pulled out of the hole.
Durability is not only about the teeth, either. Many TCI tricone bits are built with sealed bearings that keep drilling mud and cuttings out of the bearing system and hold lubricant inside. That protection lets the bit keep turning smoothly for far longer. Milled tooth bits more often use open bearings, which are simpler and cheaper to make but far more exposed to wear and contamination.

A TCI tricone bit costs more upfront, and that price difference makes some buyers hesitate. But the real cost of a bit is not the purchase price alone. In hard or abrasive ground, the longer life of a TCI bit means fewer trips out of the hole, less downtime, and a lower cost per meter drilled. A milled tooth bit is cheaper to buy and drills fast in soft ground, but when the rock turns hard, its shorter life quickly eats up the initial savings. For deep wells, hard rock, or any job where downtime is expensive, the more durable TCI tricone bit is usually the more economical choice over the full run.
