Rock hardness is usually described in two ways. The Mohs scale runs from 1 (softest) to 10 (diamond), while unconfined compressive strength (UCS) is measured in megapascals. For practical bit selection, most operators group formations into three bands:
Hardness alone is not the whole story. Abrasiveness, driven mostly by silica (quartz) content, wears cutting edges even when the rock is not especially strong. A sandstone that is only medium in strength can be far harder on a bit than a dense but low-silica limestone. So read the geology report, note the UCS range and any silica or abrasivity index values, and then match the rock drilling tool to that picture.
For softer ground, PDC bits are the workhorse. The polycrystalline diamond cutters scrape and shear the rock rather than crush it, which translates into fast penetration and gentle demands on rotation torque. Choosing the geometry that suits the structure keeps penetration rate up and prevents the tool from flexing or wandering in the hole.
It is tempting to compare only purchase price, but the number that matters is cost per meter drilled. A tougher bit that costs more up front can still come out cheaper when it stays sharp longer, reduces tripping time, and keeps penetration steady. On abrasive rock, pay attention to how the carbide is placed. Concentrated inserts at the leading edge cope with intense point pressure in hard granite, while finely distributed carbides wear slowly in silica-rich sandstone rather than failing suddenly. Look for even cutting-structure wear across the crown, because an insert that erodes evenly is a tool you can predict.
