Road milling - also called cold milling or cold planing - is one of the most efficient ways to remove old, damaged asphalt and concrete before resurfacing. Every milling machine relies on a rotating drum fitted with a row of cutting tools, and those tools are the parts that actually touch the pavement, grinding it away in precise passes. Because they absorb intense impact and heat on every run, choosing the right road milling cutting tool has a direct effect on cutting speed, tool life and the total cost of your pavement project.

How a road milling cutting tool is built

No matter which type you use, most road milling cutting tools share the same basic structure. The working end is a tungsten carbide tip brazed onto a hardened steel body, usually heat-treated alloy steel such as 42CrMo. A wear plate keeps the tool centred and allows it to rotate freely in its seat, while a clamping sleeve locks the tool firmly into the tool holder. Together these parts decide how cleanly the tool cuts, how evenly it wears and how long it stays on the drum before replacement.

Types of road milling cutting tools

"Type" is easiest to understand if you break the tools down by cutting tip, by shank design and by application. Each of these dimensions points to a different tool, and most milling contractors mix several of them on one machine depending on the job.

1. Types by cutting tip material

Tungsten-carbide-tipped teeth. These are by far the most common. A conical tungsten carbide tip is brazed to the steel body, giving a hard, wear-resistant cutting edge that handles both asphalt and concrete. Carbide-tipped teeth are economical, durable and easy to replace, which is why they handle the great majority of standard milling work.

PCD-tipped teeth. When the job involves heavily reinforced concrete or extremely tough, abrasive material, a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tip is welded onto the carbide blank. PCD is among the hardest cutting materials known, so these teeth stay sharp far longer on punishing surfaces. They cost more up front but often deliver lower cost per working hour on hard pavements because replacements are far less frequent.

2. Types by shank and head shape

Round-shank bullet teeth. The classic conical pick with a round shank that fits into a quick-change holder. It rotates in the seat as it cuts, keeping the wear even and the tip sharp. Series such as W1-13/22, W4/20 and W6/20 belong to this family and are common on Wirtgen and similar milling machines.

Step-shank and flat-face tools. Step-shank teeth use a larger locating collar to lock the tool in heavier-duty application, while flat-head and other dedicated profiles are used at edges or on specialist drums. Choosing the correct head profile prevents chattering, keeps the cut clean and protects the holder.

3. Types by application

Asphalt milling teeth. Designed for blacktop removal, these teeth deliver a fast, clean cut on softer pavement and are the standard choice for pothole repair, pavement profiling and surface recycling.

Concrete milling teeth. Concrete is far harder and more abrasive than asphalt, so the teeth use tougher carbide and heavier-grade steel bodies to withstand high impact without cracking the tip.

Mining and surface-miner picks. Road milling cutting tools are also used outside road surfacing. Hard-rock carbide picks and holder units such as the QC110HD cutter bit holder are fitted to surface miners and rock trenchers for rock excavation and aggregate recovery, where the tool must shrug off heavy, continuous impact.

4. The holder system: HT11 and HT22 tool blocks

A road milling cutting tool is only as good as the holder it sits in. Tool holders, also called tool blocks or bases, are welded onto the drum. Common sizes include HT11 and HT22, along with machine-specific bases such as the Caterpillar 2414559 pattern used on road milling machines. The holder keeps the tool at the correct angle and absorbs shock, so inspecting it and replacing worn blocks regularly is just as important as replacing the teeth themselves.

How to choose the right type for your project

Start with the material you are cutting. Soft asphalt rewards a sharp, economical tooth, while reinforced concrete demands a tougher carbide tip and a heavier steel body. Then match the tool to your machine and drum: verify the shank diameter (commonly 20 mm or 22 mm) and the holder size so the tool locks in properly. Factor in milling depth and speed - deeper and faster cutting takes a thicker, more durable tip - and finally balance cost against expected tool life.
