The rule is the same for every style: the bit and the drill pipe must mate cleanly and lock securely. Preparation prevents most installation problems. Have on hand a wire brush, thread compound (and its applicator), a torque wrench sized for your joint, the correct spanner or bit box, a soft mallet, and clean gloves. Spread a thin, even layer of drilling thread compound onto the male threads only, keeping it off the wings and cutting surfaces. Compound lubricates the joint during makeup, protects against galling, and helps the connection come apart cleanly on the next trip out of the hole.

3. Align and hand-thread

Keep the bit centered on the pipe axis and start the threads by hand. The bit should turn on smoothly for the first few turns with no resistance. If it binds at the very start, back it off, re-center, and try again. Never use rig power to force a misaligned start, this is how threads get crossed and stripped.

4. Make up with the correct torque

Once hand-tight, finish the joint with a torque wrench, applying the value recommended by the bit or rig manufacturer without exceeding it. Make the pull steady and in line with the pipe so you do not cock the bit sideways. Over-tightening can crack a hardened body or the carbide seat; under-tightening leaves a wobble that damages threads in minutes.

5. Confirm seating and run a low-speed test

Check that the bit face sits flush against the shoulder, then briefly rotate the pipe at low speed and observe the bit. It should turn true with no visible runout, wobble, or clicking. If you notice any, stop and recheck the makeup before the bit goes in the hole.

Mistakes That Shorten Bit Life

  • Cross-threading from a hasty power start.
  • Skipping thread compound and letting the joint gall or seize.
  • Under-torquing, then running the bit with a loose connection that beats the threads to pieces.
  • Dropping or hammering the bit against the ground, which chips the carbide.
  • Not rechecking torque on a long connection when the bit and pipe have soaked after several hot hours of drilling.

Looking After the Connection Between Jobs

How a bit is handled off the rig matters as much as how it is installed. After the run, clean the threads, coat them lightly with compound or anti-seize, and store the bit so the cutting wings do not bear weight on concrete. One person doing the job this way on a routine basis will regularly get far more life out of a drag bit than the crew that only cares about how fast it spins.
