Rock formation. Hard, abrasive and fractured formations are easier to core with a larger barrel because the bigger annulus gives more room for flushing fluid to remove cuttings and cool the bit. In soft or unconsolidated ground, a smaller barrel may be enough and will be cheaper to run.

If your laboratory needs large-volume samples for metallurgical testing or grade control, PQ gives you an 85 mm core that is hard to beat. For routine geological logging, NQ's 47.6 mm core is usually sufficient.

Match the Core Bit to the Barrel Size

The core barrel works together with a core bit, and the bit type should match both the barrel size and the formation. For hard, abrasive rock, an impregnated core bit is usually the best choice because the diamond is embedded throughout the matrix and keeps cutting as the matrix wears. For softer formations, a surface set bit with larger diamonds exposed on the face gives faster penetration. TSP and electroplated bits cover other specific applications. Whichever type you choose, make sure it is made for the same size series as your barrel, so the threads and gauge match.

Don't Forget the Accessories

A core barrel is only as good as the components around it. The core lifter (also called a core spring) grips the core so it does not fall out when you pull the barrel; the core lifter case holds it in place; the reaming shell keeps the hole gauge; and the core catcher helps retain loose core in broken ground. Matching these accessories to your NQ, HQ or PQ series is just as important as the barrel itself. It is also worth keeping spare core trays and core boxes on site so the recovered core can be stored and logged properly.
