Choosing the right drill bit is one of the most important decisions in any mining project. The bit you run at the bottom of the hole directly controls penetration rate, drilling efficiency, operating cost, and ultimately whether a job comes in on budget. For most mining operations, the choice comes down to two workhorses: the tricone bit and the PDC bit. Both are proven, but they are built on completely different principles and shine in different ground.
This guide compares the two side by side from a practical mining perspective, so you can match the right tool to the formation you are actually drilling.
A tricone bit, also called a roller cone bit, is made up of three cones mounted on a steel body. As the drill string rotates, the three cones roll along the bottom of the hole while the teeth or inserts on each cone crush, chip and grind the rock under high point-contact stress. Depending on the formation, the cones carry either milled steel teeth for softer ground or tungsten carbide inserts (TCI) for medium-hard to extremely hard rock.
Because the cutting elements roll instead of dragging, a tricone bit tolerates impact and changing geology far better than a fixed-cutter bit. That is why TCI tricone bits remain a first choice for oil, water well and hard formation drilling, and why mining crews keep them on hand for blast holes and exploration work where ground conditions are rarely uniform.
A PDC (polycrystalline diamond compact) bit is a fixed-cutter tool. Instead of rolling cones, it carries rows of diamond cutters brazed onto the body, and it removes rock by continuously shearing or plowing the formation. There are no moving parts, which means fewer things to fail downhole.
PDC bits come in two main body styles. Steel body PDC bits are machined from high-strength steel, which makes them cost-effective and tough against impact. Matrix body PDC bits are sintered from tungsten carbide powder, giving them excellent erosion and wear resistance in abrasive formations. A PDC bit shears. Under weight on bit and torque, the sharp diamond cutters bite into the rock and slice it away in large cuttings. Shearing is highly efficient, which is why a PDC bit can post penetration rates several times higher than a tricone in soft, consistent formations.
A tricone bit crushes. As the cones roll, the inserts pound the rock with repeated impact, then scrape and grind away the ridges left between impact craters. This crushing-plus-grinding action is slower, but it keeps working where pure shearing stalls, such as in hard, abrasive or fractured ground.

Formation is the single biggest factor in the decision. In mining, the ground is rarely consistent: a single blast hole can pass through hard lenses, fractured zones, abrasive minerals and sudden changes in hardness. The table below summarizes the usual recommendation.

The pattern is clear: the more complex the geology, the more valuable the adaptability of a tricone bit becomes. In uniform ground where speed is the priority, a PDC bit is hard to beat.
The two bits also ask for different drilling parameters. A PDC bit performs best at lower weight on bit, higher rotational speed and higher flow rates to cool and clean the cutters. A tricone bit, by contrast, is designed to carry higher weight on bit to maximize its crushing effect, and it is usually run at lower RPM to protect the bearings.
Failure modes differ too. PDC bit failures are concentrated in the cutters and body, such as abrasive wear, thermal damage from overheating, chipping or fracture from impact, and matrix erosion. Tricone failures are more varied: worn or broken inserts, bearing failure, seal failure that can lead to a lost cone, and body erosion. Because a tricone depends on its moving parts, a bearing or seal problem can end the run early and sometimes require a fishing job.
Purchase price is the easiest number to compare and the least reliable guide. Total drilling cost includes the bit price, penetration rate, fuel consumption, downtime, replacement frequency, labor and equipment utilization. A PDC bit often costs more upfront, but in suitable formations it can drill longer intervals per run and cut cost per foot. A tricone bit is usually cheaper to buy and can be the more economical choice in variable ground, where it avoids the expensive failures and trips that a PDC bit might suffer.
A tricone bit is usually the better pick when your project involves medium to extremely hard rock, abrasive conditions, fractured or faulted formations, mixed rock layers, blast hole drilling, or any job where downtime is expensive and reliability matters more than top speed. Start with the formation, then work through three questions. First, how consistent is the ground across the full depth of the hole? Second, is your real priority raw speed or dependable progress?
