Geothermal drilling is one of the most demanding jobs a drill bit can face. The rock is hard volcanic material, bottom-hole temperatures often climb above 180°C, and the circulating fluids can be corrosive. TCI stands for tungsten carbide insert. Instead of steel teeth, a TCI tricone bit has tungsten carbide inserts pressed into the cones. As the cones roll, these inserts crush and chip the rock rather than shearing it the way a PDC bit does. That rolling, impact-based cutting action is far less sensitive to changes in formation hardness — a big advantage in geothermal wells, where a single bit run can pass through soft tuff, hard andesite and dense basalt within a few metres.

Geothermal wells use a range of hole sizes. Conductor and surface sections can be 12 1/4" or larger, while production and slim-hole sections often use 5 5/8", 6", 4 1/2" or 3" bits. Smaller bits are common in slim geothermal and water-well applications. Check the casing program and the rig capacity before you order, and confirm the thread connection matches your drill string.
The biggest limitation of TCI tricone bits in geothermal service is the bearing seal. Standard elastomer seals are rated for roughly 150–180°C. Above that, the seal softens and drilling fluid can enter the bearing race, quickly destroying the bit. For deep, hot wells, specify metal-face seals rated for higher temperatures, and confirm the seal type with your supplier before ordering.
