When you start planning a well or a borehole, one of the first choices you face at the rig is which roller cone bit to run. Two names come up constantly: the TCI tricone bit and the steel tooth tricone bit. Both look similar from the outside, both spin through the same formations, yet they are built for very different jobs. Understanding what sets them apart before you buy saves both time and money down the hole. Both types are three-cone roller bits, which means three rotating cones crush, chip and scrape the rock as the drill string turns. The real difference lives in the cutting structure that touches the formation.
TCI stands for Tungsten Carbide insert. In this design, the manufacturer presses separate carbide buttons into pre-drilled holes in each cone. Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials used in drilling, so these inserts hold their cutting edge in rock that would quickly destroy softer steel. The inserts come in shapes that are matched to the job, from chisel-style buttons for moderately hard ground to round hemispherical buttons for the hardest, most abrasive formations.
Because the inserts are independent of the cone body, a TCI bit can be re-sharpened and repaired when the gauge or the teeth wear unevenly. That extends the working life of the bit and lowers the cost spread across many drilled metres. For applications such as hard formation oil and gas drilling, deep water wells, or granite bedrock, the TCI tricone bit is usually the safer choice because it keeps cutting long after a steel tooth bit has gone dull.
A steel tooth tricone bit, sometimes called a milled tooth bit, starts from solid steel cones. The teeth are machined directly out of the steel body, so the cutting elements and the cone are one piece. Manufacturers often hard-face the top of these teeth with a thin layer of tungsten carbide composite to slow down wear, but the tooth itself remains steel.
Steel tooth bits are built to gouge, scrape and tear. Their long, sharp teeth work best in soft to medium formations such as clay, shale, soil and soft sandstone, where penetration is fast and the teeth face little abrasion. In hard rock, the steel teeth dull quickly, the penetration rate drops, and the bit wears out long before its mechanical life should end. That is why steel tooth tricones are the workhorse of shallow water wells, top-hole drilling and other jobs where the formation is easy on the cutter.

A steel tooth bit costs less to buy, but in hard formation drilling it may need to be replaced mid-hole, forcing an extra trip out and back in. That trip costs rig time, fuel and manpower. When you add those costs together, a TCI bit that finishes the interval without a change is frequently the cheaper option on a cost-per-metre basis, even though the sticker price is higher.
In soft ground the calculation flips. Here a steel tooth bit drills fast, wears slowly and costs far less, so buying an expensive insert bit is unnecessary. Matching the bit to the rock, rather than always choosing the toughest one, is what keeps a project on budget.
