Choosing the right diamond core bit is one of the most important decisions you can make when planning a mineral exploration or geological drilling programme. Get it wrong, and you will spend more money, drill more slowly and pull more metres of poor-quality core. Get it right, and your whole operation runs smoother and cheaper per metre drilled. Two of the most common designs you will meet are the impregnated core bit and the surface set core bit. Both use industrial diamond, but they work in very different ways, and they are suited to very different ground conditions.

Two approaches to the same job

At the heart of the difference is where the diamonds live. In an impregnated bit, small diamond particles are mixed evenly through the whole metal matrix of the cutting crown, rather like chocolate chips spread through a cookie. As the softer matrix wears away during drilling, fresh diamonds are continuously exposed, which is why these bits are described as "self-sharpening." In a surface set bit, single larger diamonds are set only into the outer face of the crown in a deliberate pattern, with part of each stone sitting proud of the matrix to do the cutting directly.

That single design difference leads to almost every other difference in how the two bits perform, how long they last and what sort of rock they should be used in.

Impregnated core bits: built for hard, abrasive ground

Because an impregnated core bit constantly exposes new diamonds as it wears, it keeps cutting evenly for a long time. This makes it an excellent choice for harder, abrasive, broken or mixed formations where a surface set bit would dull quickly and slow down. Typical applications include medium to hard consolidated rock, quartzite, granite, sandstone and highly abrasive ores.

The trade-off is generally a lower initial penetration rate. You normally need to run impregnated bits at higher rotational speeds and to find the right combination of speed, load and water flow to make the matrix wear at just the right pace. It also tends to be slightly more forgiving in ground that changes as you drill, so it is often the workhorse choice for long exploration runs through variable geology.

Surface set core bits: fast starts in softer rock

A surface set core bit uses larger, more aggressive diamonds on the face, so it delivers a faster initial penetration rate in soft to medium formations. It works especially well in limestone, chalk, sandstone, marl and other non-abrasive rocks where the exposed diamonds can bite cleanly. Many operations choose it where maximum metres per shift in easy ground matter more than long bit life.

The catch is that a surface set bit does not sharpen itself. Once the exposed portion of each diamond wears flat, the bit slows down and has to be redressed or replaced. In hard or abrasive rock, the diamonds can wear away quickly, which makes this design less economical when ground conditions are rough.

When to choose an impregnated core bit

Reach for an impregnated core bit when you are drilling medium to hard rock, abrasive formations, or strata that changes character as you go deeper. It is the dependable option for mineral exploration, deep geological sampling and any programme where bit life and consistent core recovery matter more than a fast start. It also copes better with slightly worn drilling rigs that cannot deliver high bit load.

When to choose a surface set core bit

Choose a surface set core bit when the ground is soft to medium and non-abrasive, such as limestone, chalk or sandstone, and you want the fastest possible initial drilling speed. It is also a strong candidate for shallow holes and short water wells where replacing a bit is quick and inexpensive, and for contractors who prefer the simplicity of a bit with no special sharpening requirements after dressing.

A practical way to decide

A quick rule of thumb: start by asking what the hardest rock in your hole will be. If your programme crosses hard, abrasive or variable ground at any point, an impregnated bit is usually the safer, more economical all-round choice. If you are confident your drilling will stay in soft, clean formations, a surface set bit will give you faster metres per hour and a lower cost per bit.
