A surface set core bit is a drilling tool that carries a single layer of industrial diamonds set directly into the face of a metal matrix. Because the diamonds sit on the surface, the bit starts cutting immediately with no break-in period. This makes surface set bits a popular choice for geological exploration, mining, and water well drilling, where fast penetration and clean core recovery both matter.
Surface set core bits are available in standard wireline sizes such as BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ, NMLC, and HMLC, so they can be matched to most core barrels and drill rods on the market. If you are not sure which size fits your rig, a quick look at your core barrel specification will tell you the thread and diameter you need.
In the drilling industry, diamond size is usually expressed in SPC (stones per carat) or as a mesh range such as 10/20, 20/30, 30/40, or 40/60. The larger the number, the smaller the individual stones. For example, a 10/20 diamond is a large stone, while a 40/60 diamond is much finer and more numerous per carat.
You will sometimes see diamond size given in millimetres instead. As a rough guide: 1.2 to 1.5 mm corresponds to finer stones used in abrasive ground, 2.0 to 2.5 mm is a mid-range size for mixed formations, 3.0 to 3.5 mm suits harder and less abrasive rock, and 4.0 to 4.5 mm is a large stone for soft, non-abrasive formations.
The simplest way to think about it: the harder the rock, the smaller the diamond. Larger diamonds bite deeper and cut faster, but they carry more load per stone and wear quickly in abrasive ground. Smaller diamonds provide more cutting points per unit of surface area, spread the wear more evenly, and last longer in hard or gritty formations.

Soft, non-abrasive rock (claystone, coal, salt): go with larger diamonds in the 10/20 range, or roughly 4.0 to 4.5 mm. They plow through soft material quickly, and because the rock does not wear the stones down, the speed gain is worth it. This is a good choice when drilling speed is the priority.
Abrasive soft rock (sandstone with quartz, siltstone): choose smaller, densely packed diamonds in the 20/30 range, or about 1.2 to 2.0 mm. The extra cutting points distribute the wear and keep the bit cutting longer in gritty ground, even though the penetration rate is a little slower.
Hard, non-abrasive rock (granite, basalt, gneiss): medium diamonds in the 30/40 range, or about 3.0 to 3.5 mm, give the best balance. They are strong enough to cut dense rock without overheating, and the non-abrasive ground keeps them sharp for a long time.
Brittle or fractured rock (chalk, marble, fractured limestone): smaller diamonds with a narrower kerf help protect core integrity. A wide cut from a large diamond can crack or shatter a fragile core, so finer stones in the 1.5 to 2.0 mm range are usually the safer choice.
Size matters, but it works together with a few other specifications that are worth checking before you order a core bit:
If your ground is highly abrasive, such as quartzite, garnet schist, or heavily fractured formations, an impregnated core bit may be a better choice. Impregnated bits carry diamonds throughout the matrix, and new stones are exposed as the matrix wears away. Surface set bits, by contrast, are best for non-abrasive to moderately abrasive rock, where speed and core quality matter most.
So, what diamond size is used in surface set core bits? The honest answer is that it depends on the rock. Use large diamonds in the 10/20 range for soft, non-abrasive formations; small diamonds in the 40/60 range for hard or abrasive ground; and mid-range sizes for everything in between. When you match the diamond to the formation, you get faster drilling, longer bit life, and cleaner core samples. If you are unsure, talk to a supplier who knows the ground conditions in your area.
