For most water well, mining, and geological drilling programs, a PDC bit is the cost-effective workhorse. Sizes run from compact, non-coring tools of around 65–94 mm up to large 178 mm and 190–200 mm bits, and thread options such as Bw, API, and R32 mean a standard rig can pick one up without modification.
Tricone Bits: The Tough Choice for Hard Rock
When you hit granite, quartzite, or other hard, abrasive formations, the tricone bit takes over. Also called a roller cone bit, it has three conical heads that spin independently and crush rock with a combination of impact and scraping. Two insert styles dominate. Milled-tooth bits carry machined steel teeth and suit softer formations, while TCI tricone bits are studded with tungsten-carbide buttons that shrug off impact and resist wear in extremely hard rock. Because the cones self-clean as they turn, tricone bits push cuttings out of the hole and keep drilling smoothly.
Tricone bits are a mainstay for oil-field, water well, and hard-rock mining drilling. Options range from 3 7/8-inch up to 10 –12 1/4-inch tools, and for operators watching budgets, even re-used TCI tricone bits are available as a low-cost option for second-string applications.
Core Bits: Capturing Clean Samples for Exploration
Geological exploration depends on clean, intact cylinders of rock, and that is the job of a core bit. A hollow cutting edge drills around a central plug, leaving a core you can pull to surface and log. Core bits come in several cutting styles to match the rock. Electroplated diamond core bits deliver fast, cost-effective drilling in softer strata; impregnated diamond core bits grind through ultra-hard ground such as quartz as the exposed diamonds give way to fresh ones; surface set core bits carry larger diamonds on the face for semi-abrasive rock; and TSP core bits use thermally stable diamond compounds for steep temperature work. Sizes follow the standard AQ, BQ, NQ, HQ, and PQ series, so a bit always matches its core barrel and drill rods.

Button Bits and DTH Tools: Power for Deep or Blast Holes
For underground drilling, tunneling, and blast-hole work, thread button bits and down-the-hole (DTH) systems are the workhorses. A thread button bit carries hemispherical carbide buttons on its face and screws directly onto drill rods, with popular thread forms R25, R32, T38, T45, and T51 that match standard drilling equipment. DTH hammer bits, meanwhile, are driven by a hammer that sits directly behind the bit and transmits percussive force straight to the rock, which keeps the hole straight over long distances and makes DTH set-ups the standard for borewell and mining applications.
Because button-bit faces come in different dome profiles and blow patterns, matching head geometry to the rock type is the secret to consistent penetration. It is worth telling your supplier the exact rock and conditions you are drilling so they can recommend the right face design.
Drag Bits, Cutting Teeth, and Excavator Wear Parts
Not every mining task is a vertical hole. Site preparation relies on a family of cutting tools built to trench, mill, and dig. Carbide drag bits shear through soft overburden and are a low-cost way to open pilot holes in alluvial ground and clay. For trenchers and augers, bullet teeth and auger bits fitted with carbide tips cut clean excavation trenches for pipelines and cables.
