When you plan a drill rig setup, the rig itself and the main drill bit usually get all the attention. But anyone who has spent time on a drilling site knows that a rig only performs as well as the accessories that support it. The right related drilling accessories keep the drill string stable, protect the bit, circulate drilling fluid, and help you recover clean samples. Skip them, and you will spend more time on downtime than on actual drilling.

If the drill bit is the cutting edge of your operation, drill rods are the backbone. These long steel tubes transmit rotation and feed force from the rig's power head down to the bit, and they carry drilling fluid to the bottom of the hole. Choosing the wrong rod, or running a worn rod, can cause bent sections, stuck pipe, or even a broken string hundreds of meters underground.
For shallow rock drilling, tapered rods with a 7-degree taper (such as H22 hex rods) are popular because they are quick to connect and disconnect by hand. For deeper holes and harder ground, threaded rods in R25, R32, T38, T45, and T51 sizes give a much stronger connection and better torque transfer. If you are mixing equipment from different brands, shank adapters and drill pipe joint adapters let you match the rod thread to your hammer or bit. Always check the thread condition before running a rod — cracked or worn threads are one of the most common causes of lost rods in the hole.
The bit is the accessory that actually breaks the rock, and there is no single bit that works everywhere. The formation you are drilling decides which type belongs on your rig:
A good rule of thumb: if the rock is soft enough to scratch with a steel tool, a carbide drag bit or a PDC bit will do the job cheaply. As soon as the formation turns hard and abrasive, move to a tricone bit or a DTH button bit, and for sampling work use the matching diamond core bit.
Down-the-hole (DTH) drilling is the go-to method when the ground turns hard. Instead of relying only on rotation, a DTH hammer sits directly behind the bit and pounds it against the rock while the rig rotates. The hammer runs on compressed air, which also blows the cuttings back up the borehole.
A complete DTH setup needs three things: the hammer, the bit, and the rods that connect them. Thread button bits in R25, R32, T38, T45, and T51 sizes are the standard cutting tools for surface and underground rock drilling, while DTH bits such as DHD3.5, CIR, and QL series match specific hammer models. When you buy a DTH bit, make sure the thread and the gauge match your hammer — a mismatched bit will not seat properly and will wear out quickly.
When you drill through loose overburden, sand, or gravel, the hole can collapse before you reach the target formation. Casing shoes are fitted to the bottom of casing pipe so the casing can be driven or rotated down as drilling advances, protecting the hole and the drill string. Diamond-tipped casing shoes in AW, BW, NW, and HW sizes are common for water well and geological drilling.
Reaming shells sit just above the core bit and keep the borehole at the correct diameter while the bit cuts. They also stabilize the bottom of the drill string and reduce vibration, which extends the life of the bit. If you are doing a lot of core drilling, keep a reaming shell matched to each core bit size in your accessory kit.
For geological exploration, the whole point of drilling is the sample. The core barrel is the tube that receives and protects the core as it is cut, and it works together with a set of small but essential parts: core lifters and core catchers that grip the core so it does not fall out, split tubes for easy sample removal, and core trays or plastic core boxes for storing and labeling the recovered core.
These sampling accessories are easy to overlook when you are ordering a drill rig setup, but they decide whether your crew comes back with usable samples or a pile of crushed rock. Check that the core lifter and catcher match the core barrel size (AQ, BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ), and keep spares on hand — a worn lifter is a common reason for losing core at the bottom of the hole.
Rotary drilling depends on drilling fluid circulating down the drill string and back up the annulus. The fluid cools the bit, carries cuttings to the surface, and holds the borehole wall open. The mud pump is what keeps that circulation moving, so a reliable pump is as important as the rig itself. Diesel-engine mud pumps such as the BW-160 are a common choice for water well and small exploration rigs.
Do not forget the fluid side of the equation. Water alone is rarely enough — additives help suspend cuttings, seal permeable zones, and keep the mud from breaking down in salty or clay-rich ground. A simple rule is to test the mud before every shift and adjust it to the formation you are actually drilling.
