Bearing System. The bearing is the heart of a tricone bit. Sealed journal bearings offer longer life than open roller bearings, especially in abrasive drilling fluids. A quality bit uses a precision-ground journal with a matched cone bearing surface, and the seal design — typically a metal face seal or an O-ring seal — keeps drilling fluid out and grease in.
