A thread button bit features a steel body with tungsten carbide inserts (buttons) brazed onto the face. Tapered button bits use a conical taper connection (typically 7-degree or 11-degree) instead of threads. They are commonly used with jackleg drills and handheld rock drills for small-diameter holes in underground mining, construction, and stone quarrying. Taper systems are simple, cost-effective, and easy to set up — ideal for short-hole applications where equipment portability matters.
The drill string — rods, couplings, and shank adapters — is the mechanical link between the drill rig and the bit. Premium rods are forged from alloy steel and carburized or induction-hardened for surface wear resistance with a tough, shock-absorbing core. Shank adapters are particularly critical: they must match the drill rig's chuck dimensions and thread size precisely to ensure efficient energy transfer.
