PDC Bits: When Speed Pays the Bills
A
PDC drill bit uses polycrystalline diamond compact cutters as its cutting elements. Unlike a
tricone bit that crushes rock through impact and rotation, a PDC bit shears the formation. This shearing action is faster and more efficient in the right rock. The trade-off is that PDC bits are less forgiving when the formation changes unexpectedly.
PDC bits come in two body types: steel body and matrix body. Steel body PDC bits are machined from a solid steel blank and offer good ductility. They handle moderate impact better than matrix bits and are often the preferred choice for water well drilling in consistent formations. Matrix body PDC bits are manufactured through a powder metallurgy process that infuses tungsten carbide around a steel core. Tricone Bits: The Versatile Workhorse

tricone bit earns its place on the drill string. Tricone bits use three rotating cones, each studded with tungsten carbide inserts (TCI) or milled steel teeth, to crush rock through a combination of weight and rotation. The crushing mechanism works across a wider range of rock types than the shearing action of a PDC bit.
TCI tricone bits are the standard for water well and mining applications today. The tungsten carbide inserts are pressed into the cones and provide exceptional wear resistance in hard, abrasive formations. Core Bits: When the Rock Itself Is the Product
A
core bit does not crush or shear the entire borehole face. It cuts an annular ring, leaving a central cylinder of intact rock that is recovered for analysis. In mineral exploration, geotechnical investigation, and environmental sampling, the quality of the core sample is the entire point of the hole.
Core bits come in several types, each matched to specific formation hardness and sample quality requirements. Electroplated diamond core bits bond a single layer of diamonds to the bit crown and are economical for softer formations. Impregnated diamond core bits embed diamond grit throughout the matrix material; as the matrix wears, fresh diamonds are continuously exposed, making them the go-to choice for hard rock coring. TSP (thermally stable polycrystalline) core bits use synthetic diamond elements that can withstand higher temperatures than natural diamond, suitable for medium to hard formations. Carbide drag bits are the economical choice for soft formation drilling. 2. What diameter and depth are you drilling? Bit diameter determines the required weight on bit and affects penetration rate. Depth affects hydraulics, hole cleaning, and how much wear the bit must endure before tripping out.
3. What is your drilling method? Rotary, percussion, or wireline coring? A PDC bit designed for rotary drilling will not perform in a down-the-hole hammer application. Match the bit to the method.
4. What thread connection do you need? API regular, API IF, and metric threads are not interchangeable. Confirm the pin size and thread type on your drill rods before ordering bits. The wrong connection means the bit never leaves the yard.
5. What is the expected total meterage? A single 60-meter water well needs a different bit than a 500-meter exploration program. The economics of bit cost per meter shift dramatically with total footage.
