Machined from a solid alloy steel blank, steel body PDC bits offer good impact resistance and are repairable. If you hit something unexpected — a fracture zone, a stray cobble — a steel body bit is more likely to survive the shock. The result is a bit that handles abrasive formations — sandstone, quartzite, granite — far better than steel. Our matrix body PDC bits range from 65mm to 133mm, with options including flat-face profiles for hard rock and curved profiles for mixed formations. Because the matrix process allows for more intricate internal geometries, these bits also offer superior hydraulic design for cuttings removal.

When to Reach for a Tricone Bit

As versatile as PDC technology is, there are situations where a tricone bit remains the better choice. Tricone bits — also called roller cone bits — feature three rotating cones fitted with tungsten carbide inserts (TCI). Each cone spins independently, and the inserts crush the rock through a combination of weight on bit and rotation.

You want a tricone bit when you are drilling through highly fractured formations where PDC cutters risk impact damage, or when you are dealing with formations that are too hard and brittle for efficient shearing. Common applications include deep water wells in hard limestone, geothermal boreholes, and oil and gas exploration.
