A Polycrystalline Diamond Compact cutter is a layered composite. A thin layer of synthetic polycrystalline diamond is sintered onto a tungsten carbide substrate, which gives the cutter both the extreme hardness to cut rock and the toughness to survive impact. The diamond layer does the cutting; the carbide base provides strength and a surface that can be brazed onto the bit body.
The industry names cutters with a four-digit code. For example, a 1308 is 13 mm in diameter and 8 mm in total thickness, a 1313 is 13 mm by 13 mm, and a 1613 steps up to 16 mm in diameter by 13 mm thick. These numbers are not random. They tell you instantly how much cutting edge the cutter presents and how much material supports it, which is the starting point for matching a cutter to a formation.
When you source cutters for a mining drill bit production line, size is only part of the picture. Four factors should shape the decision:
Formation hardness is the dominant factor. In hard, abrasive rock such as granite and quartzite, a smaller cutter with a thicker substrate is the safer choice. Its smaller face concentrates the load so it bites into the rock, and the extra support resists the high impact forces that would chip a larger element. For soft to medium formations such as clay, mudstone and weathered sandstone, larger cutters can be used because they take a bigger bite and drive a faster rate of penetration without risk of impact failure.
This is why the trade-off matters so much in a shop that builds bits. A 1308 or 1313 cutter is a dependable baseline for hard formations, while 1613 cutters suit medium formations where you want more speed and still need durability. Trying to push an oversize cutter into hard rock leads to chipping and even breakout; using too small a cutter in soft ground wastes rig time and holds your penetration rate down.
Cutters do not work alone. They are mounted on a bit body, and the body material affects how the cutters can be placed and held. A matrix body PDC bit gives you a hard, erosion-resistant crown and flexible blade geometry, which is a common choice for mining and hard rock where the cutting structure must survive abrasive cuttings. A steel body bit is machined from alloy steel and tends to be tougher against impact.
Whatever body you build on, every cutter in the production batch should be a consistent grade. Mixing cutters of different grades or diamond table thickness on the same crown leads to uneven wear, where the softer or smaller elements wear first and force early replacement. Keep the same cutter across the bit and the whole cutting structure wears evenly, extends interval life and keeps your cost per meter low.
Not every production run needs brand-new cutters. For mining drill bit production, well-sorted scrap and used PDC cutters are widely used to keep unit cost down. The condition should still be checked: the diamond layer must be largely intact, the carbide base must be clean for a reliable braze, and the cutters must be uniform in size so placement on the crown is predictable. Smaller compacts such as 0804 and step-shaped 0808 cutters also have their place, especially on core and chain-saw style stone cutting tools, so it pays to buy from a supplier who understands sizing across the full range.
