The quality and safety of your borehole is decided before the first metre is drilled. Choose a wellhead point on firm, dense ground and keep it clear of overhead wires, underground pipes, and loose surface material that could collapse into the hole. Mark the location and, for shallow wells, excavate a starter pit about 30–50 cm deep to hold soil and prevent surface water from washing back into the bore. Place the rig on level ground and secure it so it cannot shift while drilling.
Set up a water reservoir or mud pit near the wellhead and connect the pump outlet to the rig swivel. Confirm that the engine, hydraulic system, and pump are all switched off before making any connection, and check fluid levels, belts, and guards each morning. A quick pre-start inspection takes minutes but prevents most operation and maintenance problems.
Operating a rig correctly also means running the bit best suited to the formation. In soft clay, sand, and mud, a multi-wing PDC drill bit cuts quickly and lifts cuttings cleanly, which keeps penetration fast and reduces wear. Where the ground turns hard or fractured, switch to a roller-type tricone bit, whose rolling cones crush rock instead of tearing it. Matched bit choice extends string life and keeps rotation and feed speeds inside the range the rig was designed to handle.
Once the site is ready and the bit is matched to the formation, follow this sequence on every joint of pipe:
Step 1 – Make up the string. Attach the bit to the first drill pipe and thread the top end into the drive head. With the helper steadying the pipe, lower the drive head slowly and guide the bit through the starter pit into the wellbore, keeping the string straight and vertical.
Step 2 – Start circulation first. Begin the pump so water or drilling fluid reaches the bit before rotation starts. Circulating fluid cools the cutting edge and carries cuttings to the surface, so it should be running before the bit spins and kept running throughout the hole.
Step 3 – Drill in rotation. Engage the drive and rotate the drill pipe clockwise only. Rotating in the correct direction keeps threaded connections tight; reversing the string can loosen the joint and drop the lower section downhole. Apply feed weight gradually and watch returns at the surface rather than forcing the bit ahead.
Step 4 – Add pipe. When the first rod is down, stop rotation, shut off the pump, and break the connection between the drive head and the rod. Raise the head clear, thread on the next pipe, re-connect, and continue. Repeat for the desired depth, adding a new rod each time.
Step 5 – Control parameters as you go. Watch rotation speed, feed pressure, and circulation. If penetration slows sharply or returns turn heavy, reduce the feed force and let the fluid clean the bit before advancing again. Forcing the string through hard ground stresses the whole assembly.
Step 6 – Reach the target and wash the hole. Once you hit the aquifer at the planned depth, stop rotation and run the pump to wash sand and cuttings from the borehole. When returns run clean of cuttings, the well can be completed with casing and screen.
Pulling the string is the reverse of running it in. Break the drive-head connection, lift the top rod clear, and unthread it, then repeat until every section is out. Support the hanging string so it does not unthread on its own, and always keep the borehole filled with water so the walls do not cave while you work. Handle each joint carefully to avoid bending rods that will never run straight again.
Skipping circulation before rotation.

Setting up on loose slope or failing to secure the rig, inviting collapse or movement.

Clean and dry the rig after each job, especially the hydraulic fittings, drive head, and thread connections. Grease moving parts to the manufacturer schedule, inspect hoses and belts for wear, and store rods standing straight so they stay true. A well-maintained portable rig starts quickly, drills steadily, and finishes more wells with fewer costly breakdowns.
