A part that looks right in the photo but measures wrong means another day of downtime, a second freight bill, and a bucket that still will not dig properly. The good news is that with a caliper, a tape measure, and a few minutes on site, you can take the measurements that remove the guesswork. Before you reach for a caliper, look for a part number. On most bucket teeth it is cast into the interior wall or the rear edge of the tooth pocket. Adapters, pins, and retainers usually carry a stamped or cast number as well. Clean the part first with a wire brush and a rag; a number that was hiding under mud often appears once the surface is clean. Even a partial number, combined with a photo and a few measurements, is usually enough to confirm the right part. If you cannot find any marking at all, move on to measuring.
Bucket teeth from different brands lock on in different ways, and the pin system decides which family of parts you need. The two most common arrangements are side-pin and top-pin systems.
In side-pin systems, such as the Cat J-Series and Komatsu, the pin runs horizontally through the tooth and the adapter. Cat J-Series teeth use a separate retainer that seats into a recessed groove on the pin and into a recessed area on the adapter nose. Komatsu teeth use an integrated centre-ring pin and retainer, and the Komatsu adapter nose has no recessed area. That single difference is the fastest way to tell a Cat tooth from a Komatsu tooth.
In top-pin systems, such as ESCO Conical, the pin is vertical, and the hole on top of the tooth is rectangular with a rounded bottom. The top of the tooth is rounded to seat into a concave counterspace on the adapter. Getting the pin system right matters because a Cat J-Series tooth will never lock onto a Komatsu adapter, no matter how close the dimensions look.
Once you know the pin system, measure the parts you already have. These are the numbers a supplier needs to match a replacement:
Measurements narrow the match, but the machine itself is a good second check. A bucket designed for a 20-ton excavator carries a different tooth size than one for a 5-ton machine, and most suppliers publish fitment charts that match machine tonnage to tooth size. Also count the teeth on the bucket and measure the bucket lip width. If you are replacing a full set, the number of teeth and the spacing between them should line up with the bucket design.
You do not need a workshop full of instruments. A digital caliper handles the small dimensions, such as shank width, pin diameter, and pocket size. A tape measure covers the long ones, including overall tooth length, pin length, and bucket lip width. For angled cutting edges, a protractor helps, and a profile gauge can copy the shape of a complex tooth so it can be compared against a standard profile. For tight-tolerance parts, a micrometer gives the extra precision.
Measure each dimension twice, ideally with a second person, and take the average if the two readings differ. Compare your numbers against the supplier's specification table. If a dimension falls outside the listed range, the part is not a match, so order the correct size rather than hoping it will work. Send photos from the top, side, front, and underside, plus one of the tooth off the adapter and one of the adapter still on the bucket. A supplier who can see the part and the numbers together can confirm the fit before anything ships.
If a tooth keeps coming loose even after replacement, the fault may not be the tooth. A wallowed-out pin hole, a worn adapter nose, or a stretched retainer can all cause the same symptom. Check the adapter and retainer condition before ordering more teeth, because replacing the tooth alone will not fix a worn adapter.
