Unlike the machine that carries them, these wearable parts are designed to be consumed. Whether they serve you well for weeks or wear out in days comes down almost entirely to how they are handled. Before any checklist, it is worth understanding how the parts relate to one another. Maintenance is really a way of making sure each layer of the system is replaced at the right moment, before it damages the layer underneath.
There is no single number of drum hours that fits every job. Asphalt composition, milling depth, forward speed and whether the crew strikes the occasional manhole cover all change how fast teeth wear. Instead of a rigid schedule, most experienced crews use a simple cycle: a fast check every day, a deeper look every week, and a full audit about once a month or whenever the machine moves to a different project. The goal is to catch wear while it is still even, so every tooth on the drum ages at roughly the same rate.
Ten minutes before and after work avoids most of the surprises. Before the drum turns, walk the machine and scan the full row of teeth. Look for teeth that are missing, holders that have worked loose, and any visible cracks on the holder blocks. Check that every tooth sits flush and does not wobble in its seat — a loose tooth wears its pocket crooked and eventually destroys the holder.
At the end of the shift, resist the temptation to park the machine and walk away. Asphalt residue hardens overnight into a crust that traps moisture and slowly corrodes the metal. A quick blow-down with an air hose or washer clears the buildup while it is still soft, keeps the seats and lubrication points open, and makes the next morning's inspection far faster.
Most teeth carry a wear-limit marking near the base of the carbide tip. When the cutting edge wears down to that line, the tooth is done — no matter how intact it may look. The most obvious warning sign on asphalt is a white streak left on the pavement behind the machine; it usually means one tooth has stopped cutting and is being dragged. Other signs to watch for:
Once a week, measure tooth height with calipers rather than trusting the eye, and compare a few teeth across the drum. Uneven heights usually point to a misaligned tooth or a worn holder rather than random luck. Avoid mixing brands or sizes on the same drum — a Wirtgen W4 asphalt milling tooth will not cut correctly in a W1-13/22 pattern, and its shank will not lock into an HT22 tool holder shaped for a different tooth size. Mixed tooling is a leading cause of vibration and premature damage.
The monthly audit is the time to give the holders real attention. Look for hairline cracks around the bolt holes, an enlarged or distorted pocket where the tooth shank sits, and any sign a bolt has been over-tightened into stripped threads. A cracked holder should be replaced in full sets so the whole drum wears evenly. This is also a good moment to check the holder blocks for weld cracks and to confirm the drum itself has no visible imbalance.
Most premature tooth failure can be traced back to how it was installed. Three rules cover the basics. First, align the cutting edge with the direction of drum rotation — directional asphalt teeth that are reversed wear out in hours rather than weeks. Second, tighten to the right torque with a torque wrench; under-tightened teeth come loose, and over-tightening strips the threads or cracks the holder. Third, use one-time bolts. The bolts that secure teeth into holders are designed to lock in place once; reusing them risks loosening mid-job or jamming so badly the tooth cannot be removed.
For crews running Wirtgen machines, the common sizes are W6/W7/W8 teeth, W4 pattern bits, and W1-13/22 bits, matched with HT11 or HT22 tool holders. Storing partially worn teeth that have 60-70% life left is a useful habit; they work well as emergency fill-ins because they maintain a consistent wear pattern instead of standing out against a worn drum.
