A PDC bit is usually the only part of the drill string that actually touches the rock, which means it takes the hardest beating of any component downhole. Cutters chip, bodies erode, nozzles clog, and when a bit fails it is not just the cost of the tool that hurts. It is the downtime, the trip in and out of the hole, and sometimes the wellbore itself that suffers. The good news is that most PDC bits do not die suddenly. They wear down gradually, and with a little routine care, plus the right repair work when it is needed, a quality bit can keep cutting long after a neglected one has been scrapped.

Before you can fix a bit, you need to know it is struggling. The most obvious signal is a drop in rate of penetration. If the same formation that used to take minutes now takes noticeably longer, the cutters are probably dull or damaged. Other warning signs include:
None of these symptoms should be ignored. Catching a problem early is what separates a cheap repair from a full replacement.
Maintenance starts with cleaning. Mud, rock cuttings, and debris left on the bit do not just look bad. They hide damage, clog the watercourses, and can corrode the body over time.
Start with low-pressure water to rinse off loose material. A pressure washer can work, but keep the nozzle back from the cutters. Too much pressure can damage the PDC cutters or force water into small cracks. For dried-on mud, a soft-bristle brush and a mild detergent usually do the job. Avoid harsh chemicals and steel wool, which can etch the matrix or steel body.
Once the bit is clean, dry it thoroughly. Compressed air works well for this, and pay special attention to the threads. Moisture left in the connection can cause rust and make the bit hard to make up or break out on the next job.
With the bit clean, give it a careful look under good light. Check each cutter for chipping, rounding, or delamination, where the diamond layer separates from the carbide substrate. Even one damaged cutter can throw the bit off balance, causing vibration and uneven wear across the rest of the face.
On the body, look for cracks, erosion, or deformation. On a matrix body PDC bit, watch for washouts where the matrix has eroded away and exposed the internal structure. On a steel body bit, check for dents or bending. Also check the nozzles for clogs and the threads for cross-threading, galling, or corrosion.
A useful habit is to measure cutter height with a caliper. If the cutters have worn down by more than 30% of their original height, they will need attention before the next run.
Not every worn bit needs to be scrapped. Depending on the damage, there are several repair routes:
One thing worth repeating: do not attempt repairs without the right tools and training. A homemade fix can do more damage than the original wear, and a bit that fails downhole is far more expensive than a bit that was sent to a shop.
Repair is not always the right call. As a rule of thumb, if the bit body is still structurally sound, repair is usually worth it. Reconditioning typically costs a fraction of a new bit. But if the matrix has major cracks, the body is badly eroded, or the gauge protection is worn beyond repair, the bit is probably done.
There is also a smart middle path: downgrading. A bit that is too worn for hard rock can still handle softer formations like clay or sand. Many operators keep a second tier of worn bits for water well drilling or less demanding jobs, adjusting weight on bit and RPM to match the reduced cutting ability.
The biggest difference between a bit that lasts and one that does not is consistency. A simple routine, cleaning after every run, inspecting before every run, and logging the condition of each bit, will catch most problems while they are still cheap to fix. Keep a record of each bit's size, type, and last inspection date, and you will quickly spot which bits are wearing faster than they should.
When replacement cutters or a new bit are needed, it pays to deal with a supplier that understands the whole drilling picture. Manufacturers that build PDC bits, tricone bits, and the supporting rock drilling tools in one place can usually match the right cutter grade and bit design to your formation, which is half the battle when it comes to making a bit last.
A PDC bit is an investment, and like any investment, it rewards attention. Clean it, inspect it, repair it when the damage is minor, and replace it when the body has had enough. Done right, maintenance and repair can add months of service to a bit that would otherwise be retired early, and that is money saved on every single well.
