An electroplated core bit is different from other diamond bits in one important way: the diamonds are held in a single layer of nickel that is plated onto the steel body. There is no second layer of diamonds underneath. Once that layer is worn down, or the diamonds are pulled out, the bit is finished. That is why maintenance matters so much for electroplated core bits. A bit that is looked after can keep cutting cleanly for many runs, while a bit that is neglected can lose its edge in a single afternoon.
The good news is that caring for an electroplated core bit does not take special tools or hours of work. It comes down to a few simple habits: clean the bit after every run, keep it cool while it cuts, handle it gently, inspect it often, and store it dry. This guide walks through each of those habits and explains the mistakes that shorten the life of a bit faster than anything else.
Drilling mud, rock dust and slurry dry fast. Once they harden on the cutting face, they are much harder to remove, and they can hide damage that you need to see. Rinse the bit with clean water right after you pull it out of the hole. Use a soft brush to work the mud out of the gaps between the diamonds. Never use a wire brush or a metal scraper on the cutting face, because both will pull diamonds straight out of the nickel layer. If the bit has been used in very sticky ground, a short soak in warm water before brushing makes the job much easier.
Heat is the biggest enemy of an electroplated core bit. The nickel layer softens when it gets hot, and the diamonds start to loosen in their seats. Most of the heat is generated right at the cutting face, so the water has to actually reach that point. Before you start the run, make sure water or drilling fluid is coming out of the bit, not just out of the rod above it. Keep the flow steady for the whole run. If you see steam or smell burning, stop and check the water supply before going any deeper. It is far better to slow the rotation or ease off the feed than to cook the bit.
Electroplated bits cut best with a lighter touch than many operators expect. Too much weight on the bit presses the diamonds into the rock and grinds them away quickly. Too much rotation speed makes heat faster than the water can carry it away. As a general rule, start with a moderate rotation speed and light feed pressure, then adjust based on how the bit sounds and how fast it is actually cutting. Every rig and every formation is different, so the settings that work on one job may not work on the next. Paying attention for the first few minutes of a run saves a lot of bit life later.
The cutting face of an electroplated core bit is its most fragile part. A drop onto concrete or a knock against the drill rig can crack the nickel layer and loosen several diamonds at once. When you carry the bit, hold it by the body, not by the cutting face. When you set it down, rest it on something soft. If you are moving the bit between jobs, protect the face with a cap or a piece of foam so it cannot rub against other tools in the box.
A quick check takes less than a minute and can save you from wasting a whole shift. Before you run the bit, look at the cutting face for missing diamonds or damage left from the last job, and check the thread for dirt or dents. After the run, look at the face again. A few missing diamonds here and there is normal wear, but if you see a whole patch of diamonds gone, something went wrong, and the same thing will happen again unless you fix the cause. Also check the gauge of the bit. If it has worn undersize, the hole will tighten up and the next bit will struggle to get down.
Electroplated core bits do not like moisture. A damp storage area can cause rust on the steel body and corrosion creeping in under the nickel layer. Store the bit in a dry place, off the floor, and put a desiccant packet in the storage box if the air is humid. Keep the thread lightly oiled so it does not rust and so it connects easily the next time you need it.
An electroplated core bit is ready to replace when the cutting face is smooth and no longer cuts at a reasonable rate, or when the diamonds are visibly worn down level with the nickel. There is no way to re-sharpen a single-layer bit, so pushing it past this point only wastes time and money. Keep a spare on hand so you can swap it out and keep drilling without a long stop.
Maintenance is not complicated, but it has to be consistent. Clean the bit after every run, keep it cool while it cuts, handle it gently, and store it dry.
