Yet many operators treat it as a disposable item, running it until it stops cutting and then buying a new one. That approach is expensive. A well-maintained tricone bit keeps cutting efficiently for much longer, and the difference usually comes down to a handful of simple habits.

1. Know What You Are Working With

Before maintenance makes sense, it helps to understand the bit itself. A tricone bit, also called a roller cone bit, has three rotating cones fitted with cutting elements. On a TCI tricone bit, those elements are tungsten carbide inserts pressed into the cone, which makes the bit well suited to hard and abrasive formations. The cones rotate on bearings, and the bearings are protected by seals and lubricated by the drilling fluid. Most premature bit failures, such as stuck cones, broken teeth, or leaking seals, trace back to one of these components being neglected.

2. Inspect Before You Drill

  • Check the three seals and the nozzle openings. Clear out any mud or debris with a high-pressure water stream.

  • Inspect the threads on the connection. Damaged threads make a proper make-up difficult and can lead to the bit being lost downhole.
  • If the bit has been in storage for a long time, spray the bearing area with a light rust-prevention oil before use.

3. Run It Right While Drilling

How the bit is operated has as much impact on its life as how it is maintained. Two numbers matter most: weight on bit (WOB) and rotation speed.

  • Match the WOB to the formation. Too much weight crushes the inserts and overloads the bearings; too little makes the bit grind instead of cut. Increase weight gradually and watch the penetration rate rather than forcing it.
  • Keep rotation speed within the range recommended for the bit size and formation. High speed combined with heavy weight generates heat that can damage the seals.
  • Maintain steady mud circulation. The drilling fluid cools the bearings, lubricates the cones, and carries cuttings away from the teeth. A drop in flow means the bit is running hot and dirty.
  • Slow down when passing broken, fractured, or uneven ground. Impact against boulders is one of the fastest ways to snap teeth or crack a cone.
  • Watch the penetration rate. If it drops sharply for no obvious reason, pull the bit and check it instead of pushing harder.

4. Clean It After Every Run

Cleaning is the step most often skipped, and it is also the one that does the most to extend bit life. Dried mud and rock cuttings left inside the bit harden, block the nozzles, jam the cones, and hold moisture against the bearings.

  • Flush the entire bit with high-pressure clean water, working water through the nozzles until it runs clear.
  • Pay special attention to the gaps between the cones and the bit body, where cuttings like to pack in.
  • Remove any packed clay from the teeth and the cone surfaces.
  • Dry the bit completely before storage. Trapped water is the enemy of seals and bearings.

5. Store It Properly

A tricone bit that is stored badly can be damaged without ever being used.

  • Coat the bearings, teeth, and exposed metal with anti-rust grease before putting the bit away.
  • Wrap the bit in waterproof plastic film and place it in a sturdy wooden or metal case.
  • Store it in a dry, ventilated area, off the ground, and out of direct sunlight.
  • Never stack heavy equipment on top of stored bits, and use shockproof packaging when shipping them.

6. Know the Warning Signs

Catching a problem early is cheaper than fixing the damage. Stop and inspect the bit if you notice any of these:

  • The penetration rate slows noticeably for no clear reason.
  • The drill string vibrates or shakes more than usual.
  • Metal shavings or powder appear in the returned drilling fluid, which often means bearing wear.
  • A cone stops rotating, or the bit makes a grinding sound.
  • Mud or water stops flowing through the bit, which points to a blocked nozzle.

7. When to Repair and When to replace

Not every worn bit needs to be scrapped. Lightly worn teeth can sometimes be rebuilt with hard-facing weld, and a bit with a blocked nozzle can be cleaned and returned to service. But if the seals are leaking, the bearings are worn, or the body is cracked, replacement is the safer and cheaper option in the long run. Running a damaged bit risks losing it downhole, which costs far more than the bit itself.
