A tricone bit is one of the most expensive consumables on a drilling job, and it takes the hardest punishment downhole. When it fails early, you are not just losing the price of the bit — you are paying for tripping time, lost footage, and sometimes a stuck or damaged string. That is why the decision you make at the purchasing stage matters more than anything you do at the rig. The good news is that a solid bit does not hide its quality. With a few checks on paper and a few checks on the steel itself, you can separate a dependable tricone bit from one that will let you down halfway through the hole.

This guide walks you through the evaluation step by step, from the documents you should ask for before you pay, to the physical inspection you should do the moment the bit arrives at your yard.

Step 1: Ask for the paperwork before you talk price

Any supplier can claim their bits are made from premium steel with quality bearings. The paperwork is what separates a claim from a fact. Before you even start negotiating, ask for three documents:

  • Material Test Report (MTR). This states the steel grade used for the body and cones, such as AISI 4145 or 4340, along with the heat number and chemical composition. If a supplier cannot produce an MTR, treat that as a red flag rather than an inconvenience.
  • Product specification sheet. This should spell out the tungsten carbide grade of the inserts, the bearing type (open roller, sealed roller, or sealed journal), and the nozzle configuration.
  • Certificates. A copy of the ISO 9001 certificate and, where relevant, API documentation. Ask for a PDF by email so you can check the company name, address, and expiry date yourself.

A manufacturer that has nothing to hide will send these documents without hesitation. A supplier that stalls, sends blurry photos, or offers excuses is telling you everything you need to know.

Step 2: Read the IADC code and match it to your formation

The IADC code stamped on the shank is the language every drilling contractor should speak. The first digit tells you the formation hardness the bit is designed for — a code starting with 1 to 3 means soft to medium formations with milled teeth, while 5 to 8 covers tungsten carbide insert bits for medium to very hard rock. The second digit narrows it down further, and the third digit describes the bearing and gauge protection.

Do not rely on the supplier's word about which formation a bit suits. Find the code on the bit itself, then compare it with your geological log. For example, a TCI tricone bit in the 517–537 range is a common choice for medium formations, while harder rock calls for codes in the 600s and 700s. Buying a bit that is too soft for the rock will wear it out in days; buying one that is too hard will give you slow penetration and wasted energy.

Step 3: Inspect the cutting structure with your own eyes

Once the bit is in front of you, the cutting structure is the first thing to examine. Walk around the bit slowly and check every cone:

  • Inserts. On a TCI bit, each tungsten carbide insert should be seated firmly and stand at a consistent height. Reject any bit with cracked, chipped, or loose inserts — a single missing insert can unbalance the cone and accelerate wear across the whole bit.
  • Hardfacing. On milled tooth bits, the hardfacing should cover the full tooth surface evenly, with no bare patches or thin spots.
  • Gauge. Check the gauge row around the outer edge of the cones. Heavy wear or flattened inserts here mean the bit will struggle to hold hole size.

Bring a bright work light and, if you can, a magnifier. Surface cracks that are easy to miss in a dim warehouse become obvious under direct light.

Step 4: Test the bearings and seals by hand

The cutting structure determines how fast a bit drills, but the bearings determine how long it lasts. A bit with perfect inserts and a weak bearing will still fail early. Here is what to check:

  • Cone rotation. Each cone should rotate smoothly and freely by hand, with no grinding, catching, or roughness. A gritty feel points to contamination or poor machining inside the bearing.
  • Bearing play. Grip each cone and try to rock it side to side. Excessive play means the bearing clearance is too large and the bit will not hold up under load.
  • Seals. On sealed bearing bits, look at the O-rings and seal glands around each cone. They should be intact, evenly seated, and free of cuts or extrusion. A damaged seal lets drilling fluid in and grease out, which is a fast route to bearing failure.

If the bit is supplied with grease fittings, check that they are clean and that the bit has been properly greased before shipment. A dry bearing is a failed bearing waiting to happen.

Step 5: Check the nozzles and the thread

Two small details that cause big problems if ignored:

  • Nozzles. Open the bit and check each nozzle. They should be screwed in tightly, free of blockage, and match the sizes on the specification sheet. Swapped or missing nozzles change the hydraulics of the whole system and can lead to poor hole cleaning.
  • Thread. Inspect the pin thread on the shank. It should be clean, sharp, and free of nicks, galling, or rust. A damaged thread is dangerous — it can seize in the drill string or fail under torque. Confirm the thread type and size match your subs and stabilizers before you commit.

Step 6: Judge the manufacturer, not just the bit

The bit in your hand is the product of a factory's process, and that process is hard to fake. A few questions will tell you a lot:

  • How long have they been making bits? A manufacturer with years of production history, like the teams behind established drilling tool brands, has had time to fix the mistakes that new factories are still making.
  • Can they show you the factory? Real production photos, videos of the machining and heat treatment lines, and a willingness to walk you through the process are good signs. Stock photos and vague answers are not.
  • Will they give you a reference? Ask for contact details of a customer in your region who has run their bits. A confident supplier will connect you; a weak one will change the subject.
  • What does the warranty actually cover? Read it before you buy, not after a failure. Understand what is covered, what is excluded, and how claims are handled.

Step 7: Weigh price against total cost, not sticker price

The cheapest bit is rarely the most economical. What matters is cost per meter drilled, which combines the bit price, the footage it achieves, and the rig time it consumes. A bit that costs 20 percent more but lasts twice as long and drills faster is the better deal every time.

When you compare quotes, make sure you are comparing like for like: same IADC code, same bearing type, same insert grade, same nozzle configuration. A low quote that quietly downgrades the bearing from sealed journal to open roller is not a bargain — it is a different product.
