1. Drilling Capacity and Depth Rating

2. Rotary Torque

Pullback (also called hoisting capacity) is the force the rig uses to lift the string and casing out of the borehole, while pulldown is the weight it can push into the ground. Compare both figures. In deep or sticky holes, adequate pullback prevents the nightmare of a stuck string, and sufficient pulldown keeps the bit in contact with the formation. Units are expressed in kilonewtons (kN) or pounds-force (lbf), so convert to the same unit before comparing.

4. Spindle Speed Range and Rotation

Different formations need different rotary speeds. Softer material may tolerate high speeds for fast cutting, while hard rock demands lower speed with higher torque. Check the full speed range, including reverse speeds used for unthreading rods. A wide, easy-to-adjust speed range gives your operator flexibility to match rotation to the ground, protecting bits and improving tool life.

5. Power Source and Fuel Efficiency

The engine, whether diesel or hydraulic, supplies all the rig's power. Compare the engine power rating, fuel capacity, and fuel consumption. In remote sites, a rig that can operate continuously on one fuel load with reliable cooling is worth more than one with a marginally higher power figure that guzzles fuel and overheats. If the rig is portable, also check its weight, towing requirements, and whether it can be moved with the equipment you already own.

6. Matching Drilling System and Bits

A rig is only as good as the tools it drives. The specification table rarely tells you which core bit, PDC bit, or rock drilling tool is ideal for your formation, so ask the supplier to recommend a full matched set. DTH hammer drilling, rotary air drilling, and mud rotary drilling each need different support equipment, from air compressors to mud pumps. Confirm that the rig's flow, pressure, and connection threads match the accessories you plan to use before you order.

Instead of keeping numbers in your head, create a simple comparison table with rows for each specification and one column per candidate model. Fill in every row with the manufacturer's figure and note the unit used.
