As the bit rotates, the cones roll along the bottom of the hole, crushing and chipping the rock through a combination of weight on bit and rotational speed.

TCI vs. Steel Tooth Tricone Bits

TCI (Tungsten Carbide insert) tricone bits use pressed-in carbide inserts as the cutting elements. Surface set core bits have a single layer of natural or synthetic diamonds embedded in a soft matrix on the bit crown. They are the most economical option for soft to medium-hard formations and are a practical choice for shallow exploration drilling where bit life is less critical.

Impregnated core bits contain diamond grit distributed throughout the entire matrix of the bit crown. As the matrix wears, new diamonds are continuously exposed, providing a self-sharpening effect. TSP (Thermally Stable Polycrystalline) core bits use thermally stable diamond cutters that can withstand higher temperatures than conventional PDC. They bridge the gap between impregnated and surface set bits, performing well in medium-hard to hard formations with moderate abrasiveness.

Electroplated core bits have a single layer of diamond bonded to the bit crown through electroplating. They offer aggressive cutting and are cost-effective for soft to medium formations, particularly in water well and shallow exploration applications.


4. Carbide Drag Bits: The Budget-Friendly Option for Soft Formations

Carbide drag bit is a fixed-cutter bit with tungsten carbide blades or steps brazed onto a steel body. Unlike PDC bits that use synthetic diamond, carbide drag bits rely on tungsten carbide as the cutting material. They are the most economical drill bit option and work well in soft, unconsolidated formations such as clay, topsoil, sand, and soft shale.

When a Drag Bit Makes Sense
