How to choose the right drill rod for your quarry
Match the taper or thread to your rig and bit. A 7-degree tapered rod must pair with a 7-degree tapered bit, and an R32 extension rod must match R32 couplings and bits. Mixing threads is the fastest way to wear out both parts.
Pick the shank that fits your drill chuck. H22 suits lighter drills and shallow holes, while H25 is the better choice for harder rock, deeper holes, and continuous high-intensity work.
Choose the right length. Rods are typically available from 600 mm up to several metres. Shorter rods are stiffer and reduce deviation in fractured ground, while longer rods mean fewer joints and faster drilling in clean, stable rock.
Check the material and heat treatment. Quality rods are forged from alloy steel such as 95CrMo or similar grades, with induction-hardened shanks and threads that resist wear and fatigue.
Think about flushing. Good flushing ports keep the hole clean, stop the bit from re-grinding cuttings, and protect the rod from abrasive wear in dusty formations.

The rod is only half of the system. In quarry blasting, tapered rods are usually paired with taper button bits, extension rods work with thread button bits in R25 to T51 sizes, and DTH rods connect to DTH hammer button bits. Matching the rod thread to the bit thread is essential; a mismatch causes thread wear, energy loss, and even rod breakage.
