Tricone Bits: Crushing Power for Hard and Mixed Formations

When the formation gets hard, inconsistent, or contains fractured rock and cobble, a tricone bit is often the more reliable choice. Tricone bits — also called roller cone bits — use three rotating cones, each fitted with rows of tungsten carbide inserts (TCI) or milled steel teeth. As the bit rotates, the cones roll along the bottom of the hole, crushing and chipping the rock through a combination of compressive load and slight skidding action.

Tricone bits excel in formations where PDC bits struggle: hard limestone, granite, chert, and interbedded formations where the rock type changes unpredictably. They are also more forgiving when the borehole is not perfectly clean — a PDC bit can suffer catastrophic cutter damage from a single piece of metal debris in the hole, whereas a tricone bit can often ride through it.

The quality of the core — how intact it is, how well it represents the in-situ rock — depends heavily on the bit design and diamond type.

Impregnated Diamond Core Bits: Tiny diamond particles are embedded throughout the matrix of the bit crown. As the matrix wears, fresh diamonds are continuously exposed. These bits are ideal for hard, abrasive formations and provide excellent bit life. Common sizes follow the standard wireline designations: BQ, NQ, HQ, and PQ.

Surface Set Core Bits: A single layer of natural or synthetic diamonds is set on the face of the bit crown. These bits are best suited for soft to medium-hard formations where the diamonds can be exposed with minimal matrix wear. They offer a lower initial cost than impregnated bits.

TSP (Thermally Stable Polycrystalline) Core Bits: TSP cutters are PDC elements that have been heat-treated to remove the cobalt binder, making them thermally stable at higher temperatures than standard PDC. This makes them suitable for harder formations and higher-RPM drilling where frictional heat can degrade standard PDC cutters.

Electroplated Core Bits: A single layer of diamond is electroplated onto a steel body. These are cost-effective options for softer formations and are widely used in water well drilling where core recovery is not the primary objective.

Rock Drilling Tools: The Complete System Matters

A drill bit does not work in isolation. Threaded button bits, DTH (Down-the-Hole) hammers and bits, drill rods, and shank adapters all form part of the rock drilling tool system. For percussive drilling applications — such as blast hole drilling, quarrying, and tunneling — thread button bits with R25, R32, T38, T45, or T51 connections are standard. DTH systems, where the hammer sits directly behind the bit at the bottom of the hole, are preferred for deep-hole applications because they minimize energy loss through the drill string.
