Whether you are drilling a water well, exploring for minerals, or operating in a hard-rock mining environment, selecting the correct drill bit is one of the most impactful decisions you can make on the job. The right bit lowers operating costs, speeds up penetration, and reduces downtime. In this guide, we break down the three most widely used drill bit categories — pdc drill bit, tricone roller cone bits, and diamond core bits — and explain how to match each to your formation and project goals.
PDC stands for Polycrystalline Diamond Compact. A pdc drill bit is a fixed-cutter bit that uses synthetic diamond wafers bonded to tungsten carbide substrates. These cutters are brazed onto blades that spiral across the bit face. With no moving parts and a continuous shearing action, it drills significantly faster than roller cone bits in compatible formations.
PDC bits excel in water well drilling, coal mining, geological exploration, and directional drilling. They work best in shale, limestone, sandstone, and other soft to medium-hard formations. For harder or highly abrasive formations, a matrix-body PDC bit with abrasion-resistant cutters is typically preferred.

A tricone bit, or roller cone bit, has three rotating cones fitted with teeth or inserts. As the bit rotates, each cone rolls on the hole bottom, crushing and chipping rock through a combination of weight-on-bit and rotational force. Two main styles: milled tooth for soft formations and tungsten carbide insert (TCI) for medium to extremely hard rock.
Unlike PDC and tricone bits that pulverize rock, a core bit has an annular (ring-shaped) cutting face. As it drills, it leaves a solid cylinder of rock — the core — intact inside the core barrel. This core is retrieved to the surface for geological analysis, mineral assessment, or engineering evaluation.
Formation Hardness: The most important factor. Soft clay and shale favor PDC or milled-tooth tricones. Medium sandstone and limestone work with either. Hard granite or basalt calls for TCI tricone or diamond core bit.
Hole Size & Objective: Small holes (under 6 inches) commonly use PDC bits or small tricones. If speed is the goal — e.g., water wells — PDC bits are first choice. If you need rock samples, a core bit is essential.
