Shallow drilling — typically defined as boreholes up to 200 meters deep — presents a unique set of challenges for water well drillers, geotechnical surveyors, and mining operators. The formation changes rapidly from soft topsoil and clay to sand, gravel, and occasionally harder rock layers. Drag bits are also an excellent option for the top-hole section of deeper wells. Many drillers use a drag bit to rapidly drill through the first 50 to 100 meters of soft overburden, then switch to a tricone or PDC bit for the harder formations below. This two-bit strategy reduces overall drilling time and protects the more expensive bit from unnecessary wear in soft ground.
A tricone bit becomes the better choice when you face formation uncertainty or when the geology is known to be mixed. In many shallow drilling projects — particularly in regions with volcanic or metamorphic geology — the borehole path may alternate between soft clay, abrasive sand, gravel lenses, and harder rock layers. A drag bit that performs well in the clay sections will quickly fail when it hits gravel or rock. The tricone bit, by contrast, can handle all of these transitions without needing to be pulled from the hole.
For depths exceeding 100 meters, tricone bits with sealed journal bearings are recommended. As drilling depth increases, tripping time — the time required to pull the bit out of the hole and run a new one back in — becomes a significant cost factor. A tricone bit that can stay in the hole longer and drill through multiple formation types without needing replacement delivers substantial savings in both time and equipment.
There is no single "best" bit for all shallow drilling scenarios — the right choice depends entirely on the formation you are drilling.
