When the bit rotates at the bottom of the hole, all three cones roll along the rock face. The weight on bit forces the tungsten carbide inserts into the formation, creating stress concentrations that fracture the rock. As the cones continue rolling, the inserts slide across the rock surface, shearing off material that has already been cracked.
This dual crushing-and-shearing action is what makes a tricone bit effective across different rock types. In softer formations, the scraping action dominates. In harder formations, the crushing action takes over. The bit adapts to the rock — you do not need to stop and change bits when the formation changes. Nozzles built into the bit body direct drilling fluid onto the rock face, flushing cuttings up the annulus and keeping the inserts cool.
